5 Must-Dos After You Close
Our job at Capital Title is to get you to the closing table successfully! But what are the next best steps to take after you've officially closed and have the keys? We've gathered 5 actions to take after moving into your new home (that many people don’t think to do)!
Change Locks
You’ve officially moved in to your Home Sweet Home! Though make sure nobody else can access your home but you and your family. You never know who the previous owners may have given a spare key to (a babysitter, in-law, neighbor, house keeper, etc). Just to be safe, change all of the locks and make copies of your own keys.
Replace Smoke Detectors or Batteries
Make sure all of your smoke detectors are working (most will show a green light, which means it’s on and charged). If you’d like to go an extra step, switch out the batteries for new ones (then you’ll know exactly when they were changed).
Plan an "Escape Route" with the Family
As much as you don’t want to think of emergencies in your new home, you did get homeowner’s insurance for a reason! Make sure you discuss an escape route with your family in case of a fire or another emergency.
Test Handrails
Another unchecked area of the home is handrails. First, check the handrails on your porch to ensure they are sturdy for when guests come over. Also rest other handrails throughout your home. The screws holding them in place and loosen over time and often you just need to retighten them!
Check Window Locks
Although your windows were likely checked during your inspection, it doesn’t hurt to test them out. Make sure all of your windows firmly lock, especially on the first floor.
These are quick must-dos, but very necessary! We hope these tips help you feel even more at home in your new house!
